On Monday (June 3rd) Eastern Time, the New York Stock Exchange stated that the issue that had previously caused some stock prices to show anomalies has been resolved and is currently under investigation.
On Monday morning trading, the Berkshire Hathaway A-shares under the "stock god" Warren Buffett plummeted 99.97% to $185.1 per share due to technical issues. Berkshire Hathaway B-shares were not affected by technical malfunctions.
As of Monday's close, Berkshire Hathaway A-shares rose 0.59% to $631110.1 per share, while Berkshire Hathaway B-shares rose 0.09% to $414.79 per share.
Not only Berkshire Hathaway A-shares have been affected, but according to the Unified Securities Market Association (CTA), dozens of stocks have been affected, with other well-known stocks including Barrick Gold and NuScale Power Company. CTA is an institution that provides real-time stock quotes for major exchanges.
As for whether transactions completed during periods of abnormal stock price display are valid, according to media reports, the New York Stock Exchange stated in an email that all erroneous transactions caused by technical issues are considered invalid. It is reported that the New York Stock Exchange, along with other unlisted trading privileges (UTP) exchanges, has ruled to revoke all erroneous trades related to CTA SIP issues involving Berkshire Hathaway priced at $603718.30 or less between 9:50 a.m. and 9:51 a.m. Eastern Time in the United States.
Under normal circumstances, Berkshire Hathaway A-shares are one of the highest priced stocks on Wall Street, reaching a historic high of $634440 on March 28 this year. As of last week, the price per share of Berkshire Hathaway's A-shares was even about 45% higher than the median price of US homes.
The reason why Berkshire Hathaway's A-share price is so high is mainly because Buffett has never split the stock because he wants to attract shareholders with long-term investment vision. Buffett has stated that many Berkshire shareholders treat their stocks as savings accounts.
However, in 1996, Berkshire issued B-shares at a price equivalent to 1/30 of A-shares to cater to small investors who wanted to get a share of Buffett's performance.
According to FactSet data, Buffett is Berkshire's largest shareholder, holding over 38% of Class A shares. Buffett has been managing Berkshire since 1965 and has promised to donate the wealth he has accumulated at the company.
