After enduring the siege of AI big models in 2023, the highly anticipated Apple Spring 2024 press conference made its debut at 10pm Beijing time on May 7th, amidst a lot of attention. This was also Apple's first official press conference of 2024.




After handing over its quarterly report and revealing its AI ambitions to the public, Apple finally released its first new product report since the beginning of the year at this special event with the slogan "Let Loose". Apple did not "unleash itself" as imagined, but at least from the new products released, it reveals Apple's full ambition.

After holding it for over a year, Apple finally figured out the iPad on its own




As expected before the launch event, "2024 will become the year of the iPad."




The iPad was regarded by Steve Jobs as a representative work of the "post PC era", and when it was released in 2010, it was Apple's most popular product at that time. The iPad sold 1 million units in less than a month, while the iPhone took twice as long. Nine months after its release, sales have reached 1500 units.




As another flagship product of Apple, the reason why the focus of the Apple Spring Launch is on the iPad series is actually very simple. Following the rhythm of Apple's annual updates to the iPad series, it has been a full 18 months since the announcement of the "no update" last year.




There are three main reasons behind Apple's proactive "disconnection" of the iPad:




Firstly, in terms of performance, the revenue performance of the iPad has always been unsatisfactory. According to the latest report released by market research firm Canalys, after four quarters of decline, global tablet shipments only slightly increased by 1% year-on-year in the first quarter of this year, reaching nearly 33.7 million units.

Looking at the iPad update with the above questions may give a better understanding of Apple's ambition.




Cook and Apple mainly did two things on the iPad during this press conference:




1. Clarify the positioning of each model, especially reducing confusion between Pro and Air, making high-end Pro more high-end and productive; The Air, which is aimed at the mid to low end and has a lower threshold, is more cost-effective.




On the iPad Air, Cook's precise knife technique is still displayed, and there are not many updates. The new iPad Air will be available in two sizes for the first time, 11 and 13 inches, and will be equipped with an M2 chip, with a total of four colors. The new Miao Kong keyboard is lighter and thinner, with a functional keyboard and a larger touchpad. Apple once again stated, "The experience is like a Macbook.".

Some insiders also indicate that for Apple's server chips, this component may be applied to the inference side of large models. However, it is currently uncertain when this new chip will be unveiled.




However, regarding the rumor of "self-developed server chips," Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman refuted the rumor: "This project has been cancelled, and Apple will not manufacture its own AI server chips due to cost reasons and lack of differentiation."

Speaking of the topic of self-developed server chips, whether or not Apple has entered the market, computing power is indeed an attractive business.




The computing power demand scenarios for large models mainly include pre training, inference, and tuning. As the number of model parameters increases, the inference cost also increases. NVIDIA founder Huang Renxun stated in an interview last year that "the demand for inference will skyrocket." According to his perspective, "in a large language model, the entire model has over 175 billion parameters. In the inference of a large language model, the response time of each token is really important.".




Secondly, at the model level, Apple attempts to find the best landing posture for the model through an "open source+small model" approach.




According to the Silicon Based Research Laboratory, Apple has been releasing its open-source AI research results since October last year, while also focusing on small models (including multimodal and language models) and end-to-end deployment.

Based on recently released model cases, Apple has released a series of small open source language models - OpenELM, which includes four models: 270 million, 450 million, 1.1 billion, and 3 billion. In terms of parameters alone, it is much smaller than other recently released open source small models. Apple has also opened up CoreNet for training OpenELM models.




In April, Apple also released Ferret UI, which uses a multimodal large language model to understand user interfaces. Apple AI/ML research scientist Zhe Gan explained the purpose of the model: "Imagine a multimodal LLM that can understand your iPhone screen? Ferret UI can accurately locate and infer your Apple screen, achieving free input and output." At the same time, Apple has also upgraded Ferret to Ferret v2, enhancing its understanding of natural images and space.

Finally, at the framework and application layer, there is currently no clear information indicating that Apple is not developing conversational tools similar to GPT. According to previous foreign media reports, since the beginning of last year, Apple has been secretly developing its own artificial intelligence tools, internally known as "Apple GPT", and the development framework behind it is called Ajax.




Externally, Apple actively seeks allies and accelerates investment through vertical and horizontal alliances.




Since the beginning of this year, Apple has been exposed to having contact with technology giants such as OpenAI, Google, and Baidu. At the end of April, Apple also revealed a restart of cooperation with OpenAI. According to insiders, the two companies have started discussing possible agreement terms and how to integrate OpenAI features into Apple's iOS 18, but Apple has not responded to these discussions.




At the same time, Apple also made a low-key move to acquire the AI startup DarwinAI, and also recruited talent along the way. DarwinAI is a visual quality inspection company known for creating smaller and faster AI systems. Alexander Wong, the company's chief scientist, has joined Apple as the director of the AI team.




Previously, we summarized Apple's AI strategy as a combination of software and hardware and vertical integration, making AI ubiquitous. Recently, a series of actions taken by Apple at the model level have confirmed our judgment.




Firstly, Apple is known for its closed ecosystem, but it is beginning to show an open source trend, to some extent, to showcase its differentiated advantages (such as algorithm design, model architecture, high-quality datasets, etc.), in order to better attract developers and strengthen its own ecosystem.

Wall Street doesn't want to see just "iPad New Year"




However, under such special events, Wall Street certainly does not want 2024 to be just Apple's "iPad Year".




At a recent earnings conference, Cook had a heated argument with analysts about the revenue issue of iPhones in China.




In the first quarter of 2024, Apple's Greater China region, which accounted for 18% of revenue, saw a year-on-year decrease of 8% to $16.4 billion in revenue. Meanwhile, independent institutions such as Counterpoint have reported that as of March this year, iPhone sales in China have decreased by 19% year-on-year. IDC also stated that Apple's iPhone shipments in the region decreased by nearly 10% during the same period.




However, Cook said that Apple still saw iPhone growth in some markets, including Chinese Mainland.




An analyst directly questioned, "When we look at the repeatedly reported data points for this quarter, Tim, I'm curious, what did we miss?"




Although analysts explained afterwards that the reason for the "disagreement" may be due to the different ways in which Apple and analysts confirm revenue.




But Apple's decline in the Chinese market is no longer just reflected in its financial reports. According to Counterpoint's data, in the first quarter of 2024, Huawei's market share in the Chinese smartphone market increased from 9.3% in Q1 2023 to 15.5%. Ivan Lam, Senior Analyst at Counterpoint, stated that Huawei's products have directly impacted Apple's performance in the high-end market, and Apple's quarterly sales have been suppressed. “Let Loose”作为开胃前菜,围绕iPad生态的一系列更新,至少说明了苹果在听取意见并在努力做出尝试,这背后也有不少无奈的妥协。


而在这场发布会后,AI时代的苹果将给出怎样的答卷,做出怎样的布局?iPhone在包括中国在内的主要市场又有怎样的走向?


这或许是库克更需要回答的问题。


憋了一年多,苹果自己终于搞清了iPad


如发布会开始前人们所预料的:“2024年将成为iPad年。”


iPad被乔布斯视为“后PC时代”的代表之作 ,在2010年发布时,曾是苹果在当时最受欢迎的产品。iPad用不到一个月时间销量达到了100万台,而iPhone花了两倍时间,其发布九个月后,销量已达到1500台。


作为苹果的另一王牌产品,本次苹果春季发布会之所以镜头对准iPad系列,原因其实很简单,按照苹果过去每年更新iPad系列的节奏,自去年宣布“断更”后,人们等待iPad的更新已经整整过去了18个月。


苹果主动“断更”iPad背后,有三点主要原因:


一是,在业绩上,iPad的收入表现一直不尽如人意。2024年第一季度,iPad单季度罕见下滑至60亿美元以下,拉长时间线来看,iPad收入增速也呈现下滑趋势。



二是,在产品线上,iPad过去一直在“做加法”,存在明显的定位模糊问题。不同的产品型号和产品世代,让iPad家族显得十分混乱,叠加繁多的配件种类,消费者在选择iPad上存在诸多困惑。

三是,以iPad为代表的平板电脑正处在一个“尴尬阶段”。特别在AI时代,前有屏幕更大的折叠屏手机,后有交互形式更便捷的AI PC的登场,如何划分自身独特性成了一个长期考题。根据市场研究机构Canalys最新发布的报告,经历了四个季度的下滑,今年第一季度,全球平板电脑出货量才同比小幅增长1%达到近3370万台。

带着上述问题来看此次iPad的更新,或许能更好地理解苹果的野心了。


本次发布会库克和苹果在iPad上主要做了两件事:


1. 明确各个型号的定位,尤其是减少Pro和Air间的混淆,让高端的Pro更高端,更具生产力特点;面向中低端,更低门槛的Air则更具性价比。


在iPad Air上,依旧显示了库克的精准刀法,更新并不大。 新款iPad Air将首次提供11和13英寸两种尺寸供选择,且搭载M2芯片,一共有四种颜色。两种尺寸本质上是为了为用户提供更多的选择,比如13英寸很符合大屏娱乐党的需求。


11英寸版本的起售价仍然为599美元,而13英寸型号的起售价为799美元,屏幕尺寸接近笔记本电脑。


在iPad Pro上,苹果是直接让其体验“Mac化”。发布会中,苹果多次提到新款iPad Pro能让用户体会到Mac一样的功能体验。

Apple Pencil上,如果忽略去年被视为阉割版的Type-C版Apple Pencil,这次大会带来的新一代Apple Pencil Pro,算是一次大更新。苹果为 Apple Pencil Pro上了一个传感器,支持轻捏、侧旋等全新的交互方式,实现更精准的控制,同时可以被轻松定位,丢失时支持“查找”功能。Apple Pencil Pro同时支持iPad Air和iPad Pro。

回想不久前库克就在业绩会上高调宣称:“我们所有的设备或绝大多数设备都会有生成式人工智能。”


科技界之所以如此关注此次发布会,也源自此前人们的期待,新iPad Pro很有可能借助M4芯片,成为苹果在生成式AI时代的第一个AI硬件。


苹果在发布会上也说:“没有M4,就没有新iPad Pro”。


客观来说,此次发布会,AI化的iPad无疑开了一个好头。


一方面,聚焦专业创作,主打生产力特点是iPad的优势,本次发布会上,苹果借iPad生态展现了在电影制造等领域的AI交互能力,对苹果来说,一个“AI iPad”无疑为其拓展了更多的人群。


另一方面,苹果目前在AI手机和AIPC上的进度略落后于其他厂商,从这一点来看,凭借着iPad的影响力,依旧可以在AI硬件早期发展时分一杯羹。


当然,AI iPad的推出也透露出苹果在AI上的妥协与无奈。


业内的一个共识是,在OpenAI、微软、谷歌等科技巨头的光环下,苹果以大模型为代表的生成式人工智能的浪潮下,稍显迟滞。


过去一段时间内,苹果也在努力补足自己时间上的劣势,试图让外界改变其“落后”的错觉。


对内,据公开资料梳理,苹果在算力层、模型层、框架及应用层均有布局。


首先,在算力层,据“华尔街日报”报道,知情人士透露,苹果公司内部代号为“ACDC”的自研数据中心AI芯片项目已酝酿数年时间。


一些知情人士同时表示,对于苹果的服务器芯片,该组件可能会应用于大模型的推理侧。不过,目前尚不确定这款新芯片将于何时亮相。


不过关于“自研服务器芯片”的传闻,彭博社记者Mark Gurman对此就辟谣:“这个项目已被取消,苹果不会制造自己的AI服务器芯片,因为成本原因与缺乏差异化。”

说回自研服务器芯片这一话题,无论苹果究竟有无入局,算力确实是一门诱人的生意。


大模型的算力需求场景主要包括预训练、推理与调优,随着模型参数越多,推理成本也越大。英伟达创始人黄仁勋在去年接受采访中已表明:“推理需求会飙升”,据他的观点:“拿大语言模型来说,整个模型超过1750亿个参数,在大型语言模型推理中,每个Token的响应时间真的很重要”。


其次,在模型层,苹果尝试以“开源+小模型”的方式,寻找模型落地的最佳姿势。


据“硅基研究室”跟踪,苹果从去年10月开始,就陆续公布自己的开源AI研究成果,同时发力小模型(包括多模态和语言模型),聚焦端侧部署。

以近期发布的模型案例来看,苹果发布了小型开源语言模型系列——OpenELM包括了2.7亿、4.5亿、11亿和30亿四个型号。 仅从参数来看,比最近发布的其他开源小模型要小得多。苹果同时开源了用以训练OpenELM模型的CoreNet。

对外,苹果则通过合纵连横,积极寻找盟友和加快投资步伐。


从今年开始苹果先后被爆出与OpenAI、谷歌、百度等科技巨头接触,4月底,苹果又爆出与OpenAI重启合作,据知情人士称,两家公司已开始讨论可能达成的协议条款,以及如何将OpenAI功能集成到苹果的iOS 18中,但上述讨论苹果均未作出回应。


与此同时,苹果还低调出手收购了AI初创公司DarwinAI,还顺带招兵买马。DarwinAI是一家视觉质量检测公司,以创建更小、更快的AI系统见长,该公司的首席科学家Alexander Wong目前已加入苹果,担任AI团队的总监。

华尔街不希望看到仅仅是“iPad大年”


不过,这种特别活动之下,华尔街当然不希望2024只是苹果的“iPad大年”。


在不久前的业绩电话会上,库克还和分析师就iPhone在中国的收入问题“杠”了起来。


2024第一季度,收入占比18%的苹果大中华区收入同比下降8%至164亿美元。同时,独立机构如Counterpoint的报告显示,截至今年3月,iPhone在中国的销量同比下降了19%。IDC也表示,苹果同期该地区的iPhone出货量下降了近10%。


但库克却表示:苹果依旧看到iPhone在包括中国大陆地区在内的一些市场出现了增长。


有分析师就直接质疑:“当我们查看本季度反复报告的数据点时,Tim,我很好奇,我们错过了什么?”


尽管事后分析师解释产生“分歧”的原因,可能在于苹果和分析师确认收入的方式不同。


但苹果在中国市场的颓势已不仅仅表现在财报中。据Counterpoint的数据,2024年第一季度,华为在中国智能手机市场份额从2023年Q1的9.3%上升至15.5%。Counterpoint高级分析师Ivan Lam表示,华为的产品直接影响了苹果在高端市场的表现,苹果的季度销售受到抑制。此外,叠加拉长的换季需求,苹果面临更激烈的竞争态势。

库克当然也没有闲着,在今年3月来了一次高调中国行后,见证了苹果上海新店的落地。“硅基研究室”了解到,针对中国市场,苹果还有诸多动作。比如,此次发布会推出的iPad,库克在电话会上明确提到,在提升上述显然还有很多工作要做。


另外,针对Vision Pro国行版的消息也层出不穷。库克在3月还参观了国内游戏厂商叠纸游戏,据了解,2月初,叠纸游戏产品《恋与深空》的Vision Pro版本正式立项。


在5月甩出千亿美元回购计划后,华尔街一致认为苹果最糟糕的时刻已经过去了,苹果依旧在寻找自己的下一个大事件,华尔街也在等待着。


在刚刚过去的“投资春晚”上,“股神”巴菲特对苹果的态度或许也能带来一些启发。尽管减持苹果,但巴菲特说,苹果公司极有可能在2024年底仍然是伯克希尔最大的单一股票。“我们还是会长期持有苹果、可口可乐和美国运通这三家公司的股票。”
